For those of you who follow me on Twitter you’ll have seen that this morning I got some good news. I was told that I’d won the Fairtrade Foundation’s photography competition to mark Fairtrade Fortnight, The picture was taken at a fairtrade flashmob that took place in Trafalgar Square earlier this year. To be honest because its been months since I’d entered the competition i’d forgotten about it, so it was a nice shock this morning to get the winning email.

The Foundation said of the picture “The judges loved the way that your picture summed up the Go Bananas for Fairtrade event and felt that it best summed up the energy, spirit and fun of Fairtrade Fortnight. The clarity of the central image is great combined with the activity going on behind – bemused members of the public looking on!”

For winning the competition i’m getting £250 worth of photography equipment (a voucher I think) and will be presented with my prize by newsreader George Alagiah.

So it took ages to upload but here is my short video from today’s moonwalking flashmob in honour of Michael Jackson.

The quality isn’t brilliant, turns out in the middle out a tightly packed crowd with a lot of journalists elbowing their way through, isn’t that easy.  Enjoy.

So with the death of Michael Jackson the news has been flooded with tributes to the King of Pop.  In America a number of vigils have sprung up, in London tonight there was a flashmob to celebrate Jackson’s music.  Billed as as mass moonwalking event it was organised via Twitter in just a few hours.  Given that it was pretty impressive that something like 2,000 people turned up to Liverpool Street Station to take part. 

In the end there were probably too many people, as there was no real space for people to actually moonwalk.  Instead people were just dancing and jumping up and down.  It was a really great atmosphere and you could tell everyone there had a great love for the music.

I also shot some (not brilliant) video, which is currently being uploaded, so I’ll post the video as soon as its done.

Another weekend, another flashmob.  This time it was the first ever London “Brides of March” event.  Similar events have taken place for a few years in San Francisco, but this was the first in the UK.  The event was organised by the same group that organises the annual Santacon event in London.

Today’s event saw men and women dress up as Brides of March" event today. The event, which takes place annually in San Francisco, saw between 20-30 people dress up as Brides in a variety of crazy dresses and then walk across London from St Paul’s Cathedral to Trafalgar Square.

So on Saturday while waiting for the Tibetan protest to arrive in Trafalgar Square I was surprised by a banana flashmod in aid of Fairtrade.  Turns out the last two weeks have been Fairtrade Fortnight and there has been a series of events to highlight the campaign.  This years theme was bananas, with some sort of record attempt to eat the most bananas in a 24 hour period.

Anyway to mark the last day of the fortnight this flashmob was held in London.  It saw somewhere between 20-30 people who were dressed as bananas and gorillas gather by the National Gallery who then just started dancing.  Very funny to watch, especially the gorilla playing the drums (like the Dairy Milk advert), and all in aid of a very worthwhile cause.
